My favorite dish is the cheese fondue. I highly recommend anybody who visits Gustav's pub & grill try the cheese fondue.

If you're looking for excellent German food in a fun atmosphere, Gustav's is the place to be! I stopped in here with my boyfriend a while ago while hanging out in the area. Both of us haven't had German food much, and wanted to try something different. We are most definitely glad we did! Walking in, the server asked us where we would like to be seated. One side of the restaurant had more of a semi-upscale bar feel and the other side looked German-esque and seemed to be more themed. I'm a fan of sitting in booths, and noticed that the German looking side had booth seating. We sat there and waited for our server while listening to a live accordion player! He was wearing traditional German clothing, which I thought was a nice touch. Our server quickly came to our table and was polite, helpful, and attentive. We decided to get their beer fondue with a sausage on the side for our appetizer and I ordered the Hungarian chicken jager (chicken topped with sauteed cremini mushrooms and a Hungarian paprika sauce on a bed of homemade spatzle) for my meal. My dining companion chose to get the veal jager. The beer fondue was a great appetizer to start with. Although the sausage was a bit salty for my taste, the fondue was creamy, rich, and you could really taste the beer in it. It came with bread as well, though the bread wasn't anything special. In terms of our main dish, my dining companion and I were both extremely impressed. My chicken was tender, well seasoned, and fried to perfection. The cremini mushrooms had a good earthiness to them and went well with the gravy-like sauce. My spatzle was also delightful. This was my first time having spatzle and I'm now obsessed! It was perfectly chewy, buttery, and had a nice eggy taste to it. I was also able to try a bite of my boyfriend's veal and it was so tender and flavorful. It's a little pricey here (I think it was $16 and $19 for our dishes, veal being more expensive) but definitely worth it for the taste and for the portion. We were stuffed once we left! Ultimately, dining at Gustav's was an unique experience that left my tummy and tastebuds satisfied!

I've been coming here for years.. I don't yelp every place I go to..but I thought I would mention something pretty damn cool that happened at this place tonight. So, as I am looking at the drink menu.. (I do know my way around this neighborhood pretty well) ha-ha I do what I usually do, "check in" on YELP. This time it was different.... The waiter asked me if I needed a password to hook into their WiFi ! How cool is that! Note; I didn't even ask. Love that move! The food is always consistent and they now serve IPA's (not sure how I feel about that....need time to process it)... Had this chocolate mousse and it was delish. This wonderful Portland Landmark is still going strong. A place that when I eat here, I say to myself as I walk to the car "man, this place is really good why don't I eat here more often?!.."

If you happen to go here on Father's Day and it happens to be sunny, sit outside on that fabulous patio. Even though we did not have a reservation, which I recommend, we marched right in and were seated on the patio. Patio + sun + parents = nice time had by all. Our server was really great at keeping us hydrated on that warm and sunny afternoon. We had beers of course but I was swilling water down like it was whiskey and I never had a dry moment. Our starter of the fondue was to me, just OK. I've never been a super-fan of fondue and I think the bread was a little stale and the bits too large for one bite. But dad liked it and that's what counts. My French Dip sandwich was really, really good. It was so tender and flavorful. My Caesar salad would have been much better with anchovies because that is how a classic Caesar salad is made. What's up with the no anchovy thing anyway? My parents, the old coots that they are, are rarely impressed by anything. They both really enjoyed their dishes, the Hungarian Veal Jager. My mom had hers with chicken rather than the veal but both critics cleaned their plates, leaving no room for dessert. I doubt I'll be traveling over the river to hang out here often but for special occasions with the parents, it's a solid win. 2015 - Review # 40

I have to admit, I came in expecting very little. I've been here a few times before and the service was so slow. I was actually wonderfully surprised. They were very much on point with service. Our waiter was very attentive and appeared every time we had finished or if we wanted another beverage. The food was substantial. We had the potato pancakes and pretzel. Their pretzel is pretty awesome, soft and chewy. Their food doesn't knock me out but I'm not a German food fan so I can't say it's really great or really bad but to me. I tried their sauerbraten which is sort of a sweet and sour roast beef. I've tried their cabbage rolls but my facorite is the schnitzels. I've been to other German restaurants and it was at comparable. I left there happy and full. Kids got the things they wanted, grilled cheese and chicken strips. All in all, I'm a fan.

Gustavs (+Rehinlander) is one of two German restaurants I have visited, and so far has been the best. I used to frequent this location much more often than I do now and I believe it's because the consistency has fallen a bit. I especially noticed, service, quality and consistency take a turn for the worst after the menu change - which I hate the menu, it makes me want to focus on everything but you should be looking at. The last time I was there I wanted to share a pretzel fondue with three people, and now I learn the pretzel fondue doesn't come with free bread to finish the fondue (hey buddy, what if I just wanted mustard on my pretzel?, bread cubes extra, but they used to not be before.) The fondu is good, very salty - I'm sure two days worth, my wife's fingers swell every time we share it. The fondue is enough for two and their mustard is pretty good, bread is now an extra charge for the pretzel fondue. The spatzel is really good especially when they cook a nice color on it. All their sausages are excellent when they actually have what they advertise on the menu. Shepard pie was alright, nothing to write home about. There potatoes are piped out of a bag and tend to be served on the cooler side and are usually the most disappointing thing on the menu. Good selection of German beers in two sizes - pint or stein. Prices are getting higher and happy hour value is declining. I prefer the Gustavs side, it's more quiet and low key than the full show at Rehinlander. Service staff don't feel welcoming or friendly anymore, just business. Prices going up, food consistency going down. I have noticed things on the menu unavailable enough times to mention it. When you frequent a place a lot, you take notice of when the experience changes and the expectations are not being met.

Happy hour starts at 9 pm ! And the fondues are cheaper. I love this place. I did a review on Rhinelander which is their main restaurant. Briefly, the following items are superb: 1. Great beer on tap. 2. Yeager Schnitzel - will make you want to learn German. 3. Meatballs 4. Potato pancakes 5. fondue 6 sausage and cabbage Great service.

Kinda dug this place, not gonna lie. It's almost like an attraction at Disney World. It's kitschy as heck, right down to the accordion player. The food was good, but the beer selection was GREAT. I love a great German beer, and they've got a bunch to pick from. They come in two sizes, big and BIGGER. The place is massive, and I'm pretty sure if you have too many of the giant beers you'd probably get lost somewhere in the maze of rooms. Might help to leave a trail of pretzel crumbs to help find your way back through.

The 4 stars is for their happy hour, which includes the most delicious pesto fondue. It may be in the top 50 most delicious things ever, but I'm not quite sure. The meatballs are disgusting, but the wieners are where it's at. Can I just say that this place offers a wiener overload. I overdosed on wieners and waddled out of here. Yep. Also, they sing the most adorable, cheesy song when it's someone's birthday. PLEASE come here for someone's birthday and have your camera ready. It's amazing. And embarrassing. Which makes it even more amazing.

Really good! Went for happy hour (3-6...? & 10-cl) & enjoyed the Love for Sale cocktail, the caesar salad (very light, I enjoyed it immensely) & the pretzel with fondue. Yum! Prices were good but cocktails were pricy. Pretzel with fondue was about $5, caesar salad with chicken was about $5, shepherd's pie was about $5. beer samplers (4 3-4 oz selections) were $5. cocktails were closer to $10 each. I'm excited for this patio when/if portland warms up.
